WATER FOR CITIES – ANSWER TO URBAN CHALLENGES

On the occasion of WORLD WATER DAY, under the patronage of City Municipality of Palilula and PUE “Naisus”, Citizens` Council of the settlement “Crvena Zvezda”, consortium of organization of civil society with media EKOPOLIS network, Office for Youth Palilula, PUE “Mediana”, organizing on Saturday, 26th March, next to new bridge on Gabrovacka river, ecological action on the coast of Gabrovacka river. With motto “Water for cities: Answer to urban challenges” representatives of management of Palilula Municipality, Public Utility Enterprise “NAISUS”, organizations of civil society, will address to the public and take a part in activities of cleaning of the coasts of Gabrovacka river.

Work activity of cleaning on this location will be held from 10am to 1pm. City Municipality of Palilula is since 2006th partner and participant in numerous ecological projects of national and international significance: “Clean up the World – Clean up the Serbia”, which generating in cooperation with EKOpolis and other organization  of civil society. On this occasion will be discussed  about activities undertaken it the past and it is important for improvement of conditions of managing of waters in city environment. Will be sent the message to citizens of Nis that do not pollute water resources, preserve and use a dedicated water.

In proclamation of the United Nations to the citizens says “ Did you know that most of the world`s population lives in cities? And that population in cities increases faster that the infrastructure network in accordance to the needs? If our city is out of water it can lead to cholera, malaria, other health problems of the citizens. Let`s all do something to this consequences do not come!” Since 1992nd, when is on conference of United Nations about environment and development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro March 22nd recommended as World Water Day, all states are encouraged to implement the recommendations of UN and to prepare appropriate activities to mark the Water Day. What are the main challenges in this area? Poverty, over – exploitation of water, pollution of water resources, health problems, loss of water.
